President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan answered reporters’ questions after performing the Friday prayer at Hz. Ali Mosque in the Üsküdar district of Istanbul.
In answer to a question about his latest meeting with Chairman of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Devlet Bahçeli, President Erdoğan drew attention to the long-standing cooperation between the Justice and Development (AK) Party and the MHP, and stated that the current developments in the Turkish politics were addressed during their meeting.
In response to a question on Bashar al-Assad’s recent statements suggesting that Syria is open to initiatives regarding the Türkiye-Syria ties, President Erdoğan said that there is no reason not to revive the diplomatic relations between the two countries. Noting that Türkiye and Syria can act together to improve the relations as they did in the past, President Erdoğan said: “Türkiye doesn’t have any intention to interfere with Syria’s domestic affairs. The Syrian people are a community with whom we live together as the brotherly peoples. We had robust relations in the past to the extent of coming together as families; you know we had these talks with Mr. Assad. It is absolutely impossible to say it won’t happen again tomorrow; it happens again. We never intend to interfere with Syria’s domestic affairs.”
